Substance Use and Brain Injury Workshop

The Toronto ABI Network is hosting a workshop on June 5th, 2015 from 9:00am-4:00pm*at Grasset Hall, St. John’s Rehab – Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, 285 Cummer Ave, Toronto, M2M 2G1.

Designed by Dr. Carolyn Lemsky, Neuropsychologist and Clinical Director at Community Head Injury Resource Services (CHIRS), this workshop is intended for providers of brain injury services interested in making their services more effective for people who are living with brain injury and who have a history of problematic substance use and/or those who continue to use substances.

  • The session will address stigma and substance use and review the demographics of substance use and brain injury.
  • An overview of recommended best practices  including the Stage of Change Model, Harm Reduction and Motivational Interview as they apply to community based providers of brain injury services will be provided.
  • Core skills for providers, including screening for substance use disorders, providing patient education, and learning how to partner with substance use will be defined.
  • Recommendations for program policies and ethical issues will also be discussed.

About Dr. Carolyn Lemsky, PhD, CPsych

Carolyn Lemsky is a neuropsychologist with over 20 years of experience working in rehabilitation settings in the U.S. and Canada. She is the Clinical Director at CHIRS (a government funded agency designed to promote community re-integration of persons living with the effects of acquired brain injury) and director of the Substance Use and Brain Injury (SUBI) program.

Cancellations: a written request must be submitted prior to June 1, 2015.  An administration fee of $20 will be applied. Refunds will not be provided after June 1st, 2015.
